It's the most important thing.
It's not possible unless you want to. Ask yourself, do I want to love myself? If the answer is yes: follow these three steps:
Awareness. I've been watching a lot of Rupert Spira videos lately. I have to be careful of what I say; "the feeling you get from the man" and "the genius that guy is" are inappropriate in the context of a discussion of awareness. Instead I would be more apt to say, the deep feeling of understanding one achieves from watching one's own understanding reflected through the objectified image of another is like a spark catching the flame of consciousness, burning into a bright glow of warmth and remembrance that one isn't merely a physical body walking around causing problems. 1) You create good vibes for freeI love to smile. It's so easy to do, costs you nothing, and inspires happiness in people. The more you smile the more you get smiled at. You're creating smilers in your wake as you glide along an ocean of smiles. I'm smiling right now as I write this.
How is it that some of us spend so much of our day without smiling? Many of us are constantly thinking about stuff. Plans, duties, work, obligations, I'm frowning just thinking about all that. A smile is like a conscious letting go of thought. When's the last time you saw a picture of a guy smiling super hard and thought "he must be really lost in thought." It just doesn't work that way. The first step to smiling more is to think less. This won't make you stupid, or irresponsible. If anything it will help you think more clearly during the times you do have to think. I'd like share some advice on how to be a good smiler, so you don't have to fear that you're walking around creepin' people out. There's really only one thing to consider - why are you smiling? It's easy to spot a fake smile, but I'd argue there's a difference between a forced smile and a fake smile. A forced smile is a smile that took some effort on your part, even if that effort was just not being afraid to smile. Most smiles are forced smiles. A fake smile is a smile that is forced for the wrong reasons. Obviously we all love those uncontrollable super bliss smiles, but if you want to smile more you're going to have to accept not all smiles come so easily! That said, I promise you by the third or fourth forced smile, you will probably have changed your mood enough that you're smiling for real. It's the intent behind the smile that matters. If your intent is to create good vibes, you will. 1) It will inspire youEvery time I write a poem it's like the Universe is giving me a pep-talk. "You're the fucking shit," it says. "Thanks Universe!" I say as we hi-five. Poetry is inspiration manifested into words. It is like having the key to who you are and what you stand for no more than a pen stroke away at all times. It is an incredible asset to the liberation of the individual.
Most people think you have to read poetry to be inspired by it, but did you know you can gain more by writing your own? It's a very intimate experience with yourself. You can learn more about yourself in one honest poem than you could in ten essays filled with details and facts about your life. Also, if you wrote ten essays about your life then you're most definitely a narcissist. The inspiration I get from poetry is like a cup of coffee for my soul. Each symbolic sip lets me sink more into myself, and gets me totality invigorated with a fresher perspective on my day. And unlike a drug, you don't build up a tolerance to it. In fact, it's the opposite - the more you do it, the better your high. My biggest problem was the fear of finishing things. The finality of it always bothered me. I hated having to commit to something being over. I'm excellent at starting things. New ideas are a dime a dozen in my mind - but finishing old ones...
That's changing today. I'm going to finish things with enthusiasm. No longer will I let things drag out. For how beautiful can a song be if it never ends? Who would watch the movie that goes on for eternity? Beginning requires ending. There's no point in hiding from that. If you enjoy the idea that you are the Universe, contemplate this...Energy or ch'i flows through your being compelled to return to itself. A circle is representative of this. If you transmit a lot of energy, it returns to you with tremendous momentum. Each relationship you have is itself a unique circle of energy that is analogous to the ultimate nature of the Universe. The relation between self and other dissolves when you acknowledge other as an extension of self, leaving only a relationship with self. If the self is loved by the self, it is also loved by the other, as they are the same. The illusion of other is necessary to reach the realization of self acceptance or self love.
"Early to bed, early to rise." For some of us, especially us habitual 2am-or-later bed-goers, that's a hard one to pull off. A tip I learnt recently is to turn off all your screens at least an hour before bed. (that means no iphone reading before you rest). Apparently our electronic devices emit a blue light which to our brain is similar to sunlight, therefore keeping us awake longer. There are apps you can download that claim to either limit or stop this production of blue light from your screen (an example would be f.lux).
How about you fellow poets, be ye early birds or night owls? Notice any difference when you switch? -Emanuel It's hard to just show up sometimes. It's been my biggest problem throughout life, believe it or not. I tend to excel when I show up (don't we all?). It's mistaken to believe something is too hard, it is starting it, all it takes is to start, and then ease can take over. If you make a big fuss over starting, then yeah, it's hard.
I got a couple of poems done today on the bus and it hit me that I write so much better when I'm outside of my house. To me, that either indicates that my house is a shitty space to write in, or outside of my house is just incomparably better. Anyone else notice their writing improve after spending time outdoors? Or while writing in nature?
I also found a poem I did from a while back, was going to post it on the main site but figured it was long and I'd just post it here instead: Give up poems today it is prose unity Building up steam like infinity Being inconsequential like redo machine Finding better influences like new partner dude Your grandma ain't the one giving you the blues It's you You, you and only you A champion of time and space Who gives a bloody fist about the human race? We do. So we better lift legs and get spades, Before we get paid to get laid on a jet plane. Lyrically I'm cocaine, Biz Markie fly - so strange Can't let her friend boy get you down Always gotta get up and get down, Funky town, Soul town, Area of old town. We comin' round. -Emanuel |
